Piano Lessons for All Ages

Piano lessons are offered for all ages and all levels, from total beginner through advanced hobbyist to present and future musician.

Very Young Children (Ages 2-4)
Pre-school aged children can enroll in our Pre-School Music Program (for children ages 2-4). Music students are introduced to instruments (piano, drums, violin, kalimba, recorder, guitar, glockenspiel), pitch (high versus low, do-re-mi, etc.), and rhythm concepts and musical games in a small class setting. Our Pre-School Music Program is offered at Peninsula School of Music, our Rancho Palos Verdes campus.

Young Children (Ages 5-6) Ages five and six are an ideal age to begin private piano lessons. A parent should be prepared to participate in the piano lesson each week in order to facilitate piano practice at home.

Pre-Teen and Teen Our teen and pre-teen piano students have the opportunity to choose which area of music to really focus on: Classical, jazz, rock, or composition. A partial listing of our piano students' achievements includes auditioning into competitive jazz piano spots at top-performing middle school and high school jazz big bands, being selected as Featured Jazz Soloist within their jazz big band, being invited to perform at the annual Music Teachers' Association State Convention.

Adult Piano Students We love adult piano students! We have more adults at our three music schools - South Bay School of Music, Long Beach School of Music, and Peninsula School of Music - than any other piano studio or music school. Maybe it's because we respect each student's background and strive to tailor our lesson program to meet the goals of each individual.

Rock, Jazz and Blues Piano For every student who has wondered why they can't learn to play their favorite rock tunes, we say - You can! Jazz piano lessons cover everything you need to know as a developing jazz pianist - comping, intros, turnarounds, endings, chord progressions, voicings, soloing, jazz theory, songwriting, styles such as Bossa, swing, funk, shuffle, and more.

Rock Piano Recital Move over, guitarists! Rock, jazz and blues were made for piano too. When our piano students participate in our rock recital, they play real rock, pop, jazz, rhythm and blues songs (not cheesy arrangements) on stage with a professional band (real rock and jazz musicians), with support from their piano instructor. Rock and jazz piano students perform hit songs by classic bands such as The Beatles, Journey, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, U2, and so many modern bands we just can't even keep track.

Certificate of Merit Many piano students choose to enroll in Certificate of Merit in order to give themselves a fun, challenging annual goal to work towards in their weekly piano lessons. Certificate of Merit exams consist of two portions - written (testing students' knowledge of music theory, music terminology, and music history), and performance (repertoire, technique, sight reading). Sponsored by the Music Teachers Association of California, Certificate of Merit exams have an enrollment of over 29,000 music students from the state of California each year!

Honor Students at the State Convention Out of the more than 29,000 enrolled in Certificate of Merit annually, several hundred honors music students are chosen to perform at the Music Teachers' Association of California Annual State Convention each summer. Each year, six to ten of those piano students have come from South Bay School of Music!

National Piano Guild National Piano Guild Auditions annual evaluations are an ideal choice for piano students of all levels. With 22 levels of advancement, there is a Piano Guild evaluation level that's right for just about anyone - from pre-reading very young beginner and hobbyist to post-collegiate pianist. Many of our piano students begin performing in National Piano Guild auditions at the earliest ages of five and six. Most of our Piano Guild students perform ten memorized pieces each year at the audition.
